Industry juggernaut Call of Duty is still doing the business with Black Ops II racking in more than $500 million within the first 24 hours on sale. Those hoping to see the Call of Duty series wear out it’s welcome will have to wait another year as Call of Duty is still a very hot property.

For those who like to draw comparisons the $500 million figure is bigger than last years Modern Warfare 3 figure of $400 million so in terms of making money it’s the biggest success yet. No actual sales figures have been revealed which would make one logically assume it’s lower than it has been in the past which I guess counts as small cracks under the armour.

Activision were obviously more than happy to give us a press release regarding their glorious triumph featuring the good old Harry Potter comparison.

Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), today announced that for the fourth consecutive year, the Call of Duty® franchise has delivered the biggest entertainment launch of the year. The highly-anticipated Call of Duty®: Black Ops II has achieved an estimated sell-through of more than $500 million worldwide in the first 24 hours of its release, according to Chart-Track, retail customer sell-through information and internal company estimates.

“With first day sales of over half a billion dollars worldwide, we believe Call of Duty is the biggest entertainment launch of the year for the fourth year in a row,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc. “Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for “Harry Potter” and “Star Wars,” the two most successful movie franchises of all time. Given the challenged macro-economic environment, we remain cautious about the balance of 2012 and 2013.”

This is maybe the part where I tell the readers that if they want to find out more about Black Ops II they should visit the official website but no, if you want to know more about Black Ops II then read Darren’s review.
