Dust 514, the massively-multiplayer shooter set in the Eve Online Universe, will remain in closed Beta until 2013, accoring to developer CCP Games. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, the developers have stated that a lot of work need to be done before the final release goes live.
The Dust 514 beta has received criticism for its rough edges and unfriendliness towards new players. Video tutorials will help first-timers learn the ropes, but the developers are hoping to make Dust 514 as accessible as shooters such as Call of Duty and Battlefield.
“The big challenge is the first ten minutes,” CCP Games exec David Reid said. The gameplay must to be familiar to people who play shooters, but engaging enough that players can glimpse the “complexities” of what lies underneath.
Dust 514 employs an interesting free-to-play model, although CCP have stated that money won’t be necessary in order to win. This is a strategy that’s familiar in the mobile gaming scene, but relatively unheard of on home consoles. We’ll have to see how it works for them when Dust 514 finally makes its way into full release.
