GameStop, America’s biggest only video game retailer, have expressed an interest in Ouya - the Kickstarter-funded, open source Android console. ”We will be a part of any console launch in the future,” GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines told Joystiq this morning, although they gave no definite plans or time frame for stocking the system.
This is certainly the push that Ouya needs to bring it into the homes of mainstream consumers, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for any solid GameStop announcements any time soon. After all, GameStop’s biggest profits come from used game sales, which you won’t get on the Ouya. In fact, you won’t get any further sales at all, since everything is downloadable. However, that wouldn’t stop them from selling you some extra controllers, an extended warranty, or maybe even a few used games for other systems while you’re in the store.
Whether or not GameStop ends up stocking the system, it’s great to see that the Ouya is drawing the attention of big businesses, and I hope this pushes developers to start pumping out games before the console’s launch next year.
