While gamers are warming up to the idea, some have thumbed their noses at the concept of a TV show and a video game actively influencing one another. The staff behind games such as EverQuest, Borderlands and RIFT have joined forces to create the third person shooter MMO that will explore the questionable concept. Defiance is set to be released some time in April 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. The show it’s based around is still in development and will be aired on the SyFy channel around the same time.
As the show follows aliens called ‘Votans’ who come to the planet Earth following the destruction of their solar system, the game will drop its player into the center of a planet desecrated by decades of war between the aliens and humans. The MMO’s open world will be set in San Francisco Bay, where players will have a variety of single and multiplayer missions to sort through. The server, according to Trion Worlds, will be able to hold tens of thousands of players.
Gamers will find no shortage of customization options in Defiance, as they will be able to choose between alien and human races, play with various elements of appearance, pursue weapons upgrades, and choose different specializations for their created characters.
