Notch Won’t Be Funding Psychonauts 2

If you’re like me, you’ve been waiting for a sequel to Psychonauts for quite some time. Double Fine’s awesome 2005 platformer has achieved a sort of cult following, but was never a big enough commercial success to warrant a sequel. That’s why Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson contacted Psychonauts creator Tim Schafer last year, offering some financial backing to get the project going. Well, according to a recent Reddit post, it looks as though Notch slightly underestimated the amount needed….

“I somewhat naively thought ‘a couple of million’ was two million,” wrote Notch. “I had no doubt in my mind that a Psychonauts 2 would earn that money back easily. Turns out they wanted 18 million dollars, haha. I don’t have the time at the moment to even try to get educated enough to make an 18 million dollar deal. Perhaps in some distant future when I’m no longer trying to make games, I could get into angel investing. I’ve made one private investment into a game so far, at $100K, and it’s frankly a lot more work than I thought.”

To be fair, the word ‘couple’ has never meant 18, no matter how hard you stretch it. Unfortunately, this means that Psychonauts 2 is back in the realm of wishful thinking, rather than possible reality. I guess it’s time for Schafer to hit up Kickstarter and seek funding there. After the success of his last crowd-sourcing attempt, I don’t think this one will be a problem.
