Imagine a game conceived by the developers from Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, Uncharted, and Prince of Persia. What comes to mind? Maybe the award-winning formula of an eye peeling stealth action game, or the thought of a third person shooter with stealth elements and a taste of the surreal. While the dream team mentioned above does exist, their upcoming game is none of those things. Outlast, which will be coming to PC next year, is actually a survival horror game. Now who would’ve thought of that?
Red Barrels is an independent developer from Montreal whose focus is downloadable single-player games. The three co-founders come from all of the prestigious titles above. One of them is Philippe Morin, the game designer from Assassin’s Creed, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. David Chateauneuf is the level designer who worked on Assassin’s Creed, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, and Splinter Cell: Conviction. The third founder is Art Director Hugo Dallaire who worked on Splinter Cell: Conviction and Army of Two.
Their new game, Outlast, puts players in the shoes of an independent journalist named Miles Upshur who, acting on a tip, breaks into a secret research facility to find out what lies inside. A long way from civilization in the distant mountains of Colorado, Miles must survive a hellish onslaught from the revolting experiments that lurk in the bowels of the former laboratory. His only hope of escaping is discovering the truth behind the research facility buried in the seclusion of Mount Massive Asylum.
Red Barrels Co-Founder and Level Designer David Chateauneuf commented: “Our team has a lot of previous experience creating big, blockbuster games. We’re all really excited to see what kind of fear-based emotional rollercoaster we can build on our own!”
