Blue Core Studios has released Sonic, a 20-minute fan film that brings the famous hedgehog’s tale into the real world. Directed by Eddie Lebron and starring Jaleel White (who has played Sonic before), the film tells the story of a twisted doctor whose plans for total domination are interrupted by the arrival of the mysterious Blue Blur. To be honest, I’m surprised the film wasn’t called ‘The Blue Blur’, in keeping with big-budget blockbusters such as The Dark Knight and Man of Steel.
While an amusing way to spend a bit of time, don’t expect to be blown away by Sonic. The CG leaves a lot to be desired and the acting is beyond cheesy, but I suppose I’ve seen fan films that are far worse. Of course, this was never meant to be an amazing stand-alone product, but more of a spec film that shows how Sonic can be incorporated into live-action.
Unfortunately, the proper final cut of the film was lost to a Trojan, so those who watched the premier at MAGFest last weekend were treated to a rough production cut instead. The version you’re about to watch has been re-finished over the last week, but one can’t help but wonder if the lost version would have been a little more polished. Nevertheless, it’s still a damn sight better than the majority of video game movies released these days!
