Sony are the only big players in the console market to be at GamesCom 2012, their Press Conference taking place on August 14th. Could Sony play an ACE card and annonce their Next Gen Console and steal the show?
Internet rumours of a new and Super-Slim update to the PS3 have been going round for sometime, but does this really make any sense? We already have slim PS3s and the price point is now on par with Microsoft’s Xbox 360. Do you really believe that their big show at Gamescom will be a new version of the already-on-the-market slim PS3?
In the past E3 has been the big launch platform for console announcements, but this year was different, there was none; console announcements usually follow a trend. E3 announcement, more info at gamescom, even more info at next years E3, then launch winter. So why no console announcements this year if we are getting new consoles in winter 2013 (Not confirmed dates)? If we take the above trend for example, the simple answer could be at the time everyone was unsure if E3 would be on in 2013 due to building work (don’t worry, E3 is now confirmed). So maybe Sony held back for GamesCom, this would give them a simler time scale to the trend above.
There are also rumours that Mafia 3 will be a launch title for the Next Gen PS4. News broke late last week from insiders at 2KGames, see article HERE. Mafia 3 is said to have a launch window of holiday 2013. So if next-gen games have a launch window of winter 2013, surely consoles will be available.
There is also one more option that Sony could go down at Gamescom 2012, that being Cloud Gaming. Sony paid $380 million buying Gaikai just a couple of months ago. Rumours running up to E3 2012 was that Sony’s E3 press conference would be aimed towards this news, but the deal took extra time to broker than both parties thought. Could Sony finally show us what plans they have for their new Cloud Gaming service.
Sony are known for using GameCom to make big announcements, from the PS3 Slim to big price cuts to their retail units, Maybe, just maybe, we will hear and see news of the future of PlayStation.
