While God of War: Ascension offers an introspective glimpse into the backstory of its protagonist Kratos, the game’s real appeal stems from its new online multiplayer. Players get their own customizable characters and a selection of four gods to choose from: Zeus, Ares, Hades or Poseidon. Under the tutelage of one of these deities, players gut one another in 4 v 4 deathmatches for experience and the opportunity to slaughter a giant cyclops with their team. As the gladiators struggle to reach the status of demi-god, they fight with special weapons, armor sets, and magic abilities given to them by the god of their choosing; however, there is a story behind their life-threatening aspirations.
The Gods of Olympus watched from above as mortals began to organize themselves into States. The pantheon, questioning the loyalty behind their self-rule, began encouraging calamity amongst the neighboring nations. They showered them with gifts and praise for the ruthless slaughter of one another, creating a detrimental cycle. The States, desperate to reclaim the favor of the gods, strengthened their armies so they could mindlessly to charge into a bloody war. The gods, entertained by their unwitting puppets, seek to find champions in a mass of soldiers.
Set for a 2013 release date, God of War: Ascension will bring its multiplayer beta to PlayStation Plus some time this winter. Do you think that Ascension’s multiplayer will set a new standard for God of War sequels to follow? Comment below.
