Devolver Digital have released a new trailer for the upcoming sequel to Hotline Miami, the 2D, top-down, gratuitous violence simulator from Dennaton Games.
The trailer, titled Dial Tone, shows the player character dual wielding sub-machine guns, decimating an enemy with a chainsaw as well as what appears to be an NPC buddy. As well as the new features, it looks like there are some new takedowns and abilities like combat rolls and quick 180 degree turns.
For anyone who hasn’t played Hotline Miami, it’s a difficult one to describe. It’s very, very unforgiving, there’s a pretty heavy mixture between stealth, extreme violence and cocaine inspired music. The storytelling is absolutely bananas, the narrative itself is crazy and you can wear masks that give you different abilities.
Flippancy aside, it’s a tremendous game. The retro art style is great, and the atmosphere is superb (it takes a lot of inspiration from the movie Drive). The gameplay is stupendous, it’s almost like a series of sneezes. You can feel the tension building as you plan your pattern of attack, there’s a pause, then it all explodes. Though unlike sneezes there are peoples brains all over the floor afterwards.
Check out the trailer and some gameplay footage below. Just FYI, and in case you hadn’t figured it out already, the trailer is very NSFW and it’s NSFC (Not Safe For Children) and if you’ve got any aversion to extreme violence/extreme awesome it’s not for you either.
Hotline Miami is available on PS3, Xbox 360, PS Vita and PC. It’s also currently free for PS+ users on Vita in the EU. (As long as it’s not been banned anywhere)
