Some of you may remember that years ago a team of fans who weren’t satisfied with Valve’s Source engine remake of the original Half-life began work on their own version, called Black Mesa. Unlike Valve’s own release, rather than simply porting the game over to the Half-life 2 engine they set out to re-imagine the entire game using the brand new technology on offer.
Originally pencilled in for a 2009 release, it suffered numerous delays and ultimately seemed to slip into development limbo. Very little has been heard from the mod since, and aside from occasional updates most assumed it had run out of steam (no pun intended).
Luckily, it looks like development of Black Mesa has been continuing on behind the scenes, and they have finally announced that the mod will be launching in just one week. While this is great news for Half-life fans, it is worth noting that the entire game will not be available on September 14th. Rather, it will only be playable up to the Lambda core level.
While it’s a little disappointing the entire game won’t be included, the development team behind it have promised that the rest of it is being actively worked on and will be released once ready. Here’s hoping it doesn’t take another 3 years!
