Metro: Last Light Dropping Multiplayer Mode

4A Games have just revealed that they will be dropping the multiplayer aspect of Metro: Last Light, the sequel to 2010′s Metro 2033. This will give the team more time to focus on the important single player campaign but, of course, not everyone is happy with the decision.

“Right now we’re 100% focused on the single player campaign and not thinking beyond that,” revealed the studio. “We don’t like throwing away work though, it’s a project we could potentially return to after Metro: Last Light ships. We are gamers at the studio and really wanted to bring the world of Metro to life in a multiplayer environment. It was a decision made by us at 4A from the outset and THQ have since been supportive every step of the way, including our decision to put multiplayer on hold. In hindsight, it was probably a mistake to announce it when we did, but we’re an enthusiastic team and wanted to be open about what we we’re making!”

I can’t help but see this move as a good thing. So may studios bow to public pressure and shoehorn multiplayer into their games, taking valuable resources away from the main story. While multiplayer has its place, it’s unlikely that a title such as this will lure competitive players away from Halo and Call of Duty for long. Announcing that you’re going to drop multiplayer to focus on the important single player portion shows conviction, and I respect 4A for it.

Of course, with many months to go before Metro: Last Light hits stores, there’s a chance they’ll take the complaints too seriously and change their minds. I, for one, hope they don’t.
