If you’ve been reading any video game news sites over the last year, you’re bound to have seen numerous posts about the success of Minecraft and its creator Mojang. We already knew that Minecraft sold a ridiculous 15 million copies last year, but up until now, we didn’t know exactly how much money Mojang had received from these sales. Well, now we know: Mojang took in SEK 1.5 billion in 2012, which translates to just over $237 million.
This figure is really incredible. I know that in our modern society we hear talk of millions, or even billions of dollars changing hands every day, but this is an independent studio we’re talking about. People have been playing Minecraft for a few years now, but it’s only in the last year that it’s really taken off with the mainstream gaming crowd. The Xbox 360 and mobile versions played a big part in this success, but we shouldn’t discount the original PC version, which is still selling strong.
So congratulations, Mojang. Having spent many (hundreds of) hours playing Minecraft, I completely understand why you’ve been so successful. Let’s just hope that your next game is every bit as fun and addictive.
