Nintendo have released a list of this week’s eShop UK downloads for January 9th. As per usual this list only applies to gamers in the UK/Europe and does not mean these are available to download right now, you’ll have to wait until Thursday as it’s the day Nintendo updates the eShop.
- Contra III The Alien Wars (Konami)

In the year 2636, the Alien War rages on, and it’s up to two soldiers, Jimbo and Scully, to stop the invasion. In this US version of the Super NES™ classic, play solo or with a friend and battle through six stages of non-stop, run-and-gun action. Collect power-ups including bombs, flamethrowers, spread shots, lasers and homing guns. Control Jimbo and Scully as they travel through war-torn cities, race on air bikes, ride missiles and ultimately break into the alien base to defeat the boss once and for all. Please note, this title was originally released in Europe as “Super Probotector: Alien Rebels”.
This is the US version of the game.

Mario Bros. is a treasure trove of gaming history. The follow-up to the hit Donkey Kong, it was not only the first time our hero was known as Mario, it also introduced his brother Luigi, green pipes, coins and even more now-familiar elements of the Mario series. The gameplay is simple yet challenging: eliminate all the enemies in each level for a big score. However, Mario cannot jump on enemies from above so must hit them from below and finish them off with a kick. Add a second player as Luigi for even more fun!

Xav’s Recommendation
Contra III The Alien Wars finally comes to Europe in it’s original non botched glory. By that I mean we’re getting the real Contra III and not the crappy censored version called Super Probotector. For whatever reason alongside the name change, Super Probotector replaced the original human character with silly looking robots.
Anyway Contra III is one of the finest run ‘n gun shooters of all time and any self respecting gamer should at least give it a go. We just need Contra Hard Corps now so I can die happy.
