It’s always really sad when we hear about layoffs in the video game industry. It’s especially sad when the studio in question just released a highly-anticipated, major holiday title. In this case, the studio is SuperBot Entertainment (who develop exclusively for Sony) and the game is PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. In a recent statement to Polygon, SCEA confirmed that the layoffs are taking place, despite the continued work on PS All-Stars DLC.
“SCEA can confirm that SuperBot Entertainment did make a reduction in their workforce today,” SCEA told Polygon. “The studio and SCEA remain committed to supporting PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale post launch, including developing the title’s forthcoming DLC releases in the coming months. The first character pack (including Kat from Gravity Rush and Emmett Graves from Starhawk) will be available for download on Feb. 12 and will be free for the first two weeks. We’ll be sharing news of additional upcoming content soon.”
According to Mike Birkhead, a developer at Insomniac Games, the number of layoffs is around 20, but this statement has been neither confirmed nor denied. Whatever the final number may be, it’s such a shame to see Sony dump their employees so soon after PlayStation All-Stars hit shelves.
