PS Vita Hacked - Is Homebrew on the Way?

The PlayStation Vita can now join the ranks of pretty much every other console released, as its security measures have been broken, paving the way for possible homebrew applications. The security-bypassing program is called the Usermode Vita Loader project (UVL) and is brought to us by a hacker named Yifan Lu.

Okay, it’s not a finished project, and can’t run anything yet, but Yifan is looking for others to contribute to its growth and bring some full homemade apps to the party. Up until now it was possible to use a program called the Vita Halfbyte Loader to run PSP homebrew, but this hack should allow access to the full hardware of the Vita. Of course, there’s a strong possibility that Sony will block the program before its ready, so don’t get your hopes up too much.

Oh, and if you’re a filthy pirate who’s salivating at the possibility of stealing retail games using UVL, I’m happy to say that it isn’t going to happen - Commercial Vita games are encrypted and will not run using this exploit. Go back to drinking rum and singing sea shanties, you thieving bastards.
