I just had to post this one, as it gives us a glimpse into an alternate reality - one in which Nintendo decided to license out their games to other console makers. In case you wondered, no, this port of Super Mario Bros. on the Atari 2600 is in no way official, and wasn’t discovered in a super-secret vault after all these years. Instead, it comes to us from AtariAge contributor Sprybug, who is working on adding more levels to the game.
As impressive as it is, I can’t help but imagine how I would have felt if I’d played this as a kid. Much like those children who eagerly popped in Atari copies of Pacman, only to discover how lame it was compared to the arcade version, I’m sure this would have disappointed many kids who finally thought they were catching up to their NES-owning friends. Don’t get me wrong, I would have played it and told everyone it was awesome, but every time I hurled one of those fireballs a little part of me would die.
