Super Retro Squad Legitimises Super Mario Bros. Crossover

Super Retro Squad

As a child, I always dreamed of bringing characters from one video game into another. Now, decades later, that fantasy has been (partially) realized with Super Mario Bros. Crossover. For those unaware, Crossover brings many classic 8-bit characters into the world of Super Mario Bros., giving you their powers and abilities as you explore the Mushroom Kingdom.

Unfortunately, as a fan project, developer Exploding Rabbit has been unable to make any money from the stolen IPs. That’s where Super Retro Squad enters the story - it’s a brand-new game based on the Crossover idea - familiar characters in a classic retro world; similar enough to invoke nostalgia, but unique enough to avoid copyright infringement.

It sounds like a fun game, and features both 8 and 16-bit graphics, spread over 40+ levels of 2D platforming fun. There’s even 4-player online co-op, bringing the past into the present! Of course, this is a Kickstarter project, so nothing will appear if the $10,000 goal isn’t reached in the next 25 days. If you want a copy of your own, a mere $15 pledge will guarantee it, although larger donations receive more benefits (as always).

Super Retro Squad is set for March 2013, on PC, Mac, and Linux, with Andoid and iOS versions to follow. Here’s a video to get you excited:
