Zelda: A Link to the Past 2 Footage

A thirteen minute gameplay video of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2 has been released online!

We can only assume this is test footage, but a lot of enemies seem to make their return in this sequel - in fact all enemies in this footage are from the first game (Even Moldorm, everyone’s favourite worm boss makes an appearance). In terms of innovation though, we do get treated to a new “merge” system in which Link merges into the walls around him which allows for plenty of secret-hunting and hidden passages within the dungeon - which, by the way, is freaking huge.

Moving from inside the dungeon to outside and moving between floors is seamless; the whole game feels like one consistent world and no longer are we treated to black screens as the game transitions from section to another. There weren’t necessarily any problems with loading on the SNES, but this is a nice subtle touch that really adds to the immersion.

Personal opinions? I got kind of let down by this footage. I couldn’t help but get the impression that Nintendo felt that simply making A Link to the Past sequel was gonna earn them some instant cash. The merge ability looks dry, the graphics are the same old and I mean traversing a dimension within walls? How about possessing enemies? Turning into a giant Link? Just give me excitement! Let’s cross our fingers and toes that this “merging” actually gets utilized with some intelligence in a puzzle or boss or anything.

I’m a great fan of A Link to the Past and would hate for this opportunity to go to waste.
